From 1920 to 1923,
Buster Keaton made about two dozen short films, which were the beginning of his creative flowering. He built his comic game on equanimity. There was such a legend (or maybe a true story?) that "The Man Who Never Laughs" undertook, even under a contract, not to smile either in films or in public. His impassive composure contrasted sharply with the extravagant situations he found himself in.
Although these films are unequal in artistic value, they do not always differ in plot integrity and originality, but the abundance of successful gags, the unusualness of the central character, and the unsurpassed pace of development of events make even not entirely successful short films interesting. As for the rest, some critics regarded them as the best part of Keaton's creative heritage.

Intertitle texts in Buster Keaton's short films often contain allusions, ambiguities, wordplay, without understanding which it is difficult to understand individual jokes. We tried to decipher them as fully as possible, despite the well-known "difficulties in translation".
Several films have been remastered for this BD edition and feature brand new intertitles, remastered from the original scripts. In addition, in some films, explanatory titles appear in place of lost scenes, and sometimes surviving photographs from these scenes.
We found an extra intertitle in Prisoner No. 13, which was apparently added by mistake by the restorers and which we safely removed during encoding, keeping the video in sync with the sound effects present on the audio track in addition to the musical accompaniment. It should be noted that "Prisoner #13" is the only film in this edition, for the restoration of which was used not the best copy available in the film archives. There is also a more complete version of the movie Hard Luck.
